APPLIQUE THANGKA INSTITUTE Where special people make special Thangkas
About this Institute

A unique project for wheelchair users, the Applique Thangka Institute focuses on the art of embroidered Thangka—a form of textile art that involves intricate stitching and design work. The collective nature of the work encourages collaboration and skill sharing, building a strong sense of community among participants.

The project has since blossomed into a vibrant community of artists and learners. Students in wheelchairs eagerly engage in this artwork, sharing their experiences and finding the activity both interesting and worthwhile. The intricate process of creating these Thangka pieces not only provides a creative outlet but also fosters a sense of accomplishment and purpose among the participants. The detailed craftsmanship required in applique Thangka art demands patience and precision, skills that the students develop and refine over time.

Apart from the artistic benefits, the institute has created a strong platform for individuals with disabilities, particularly those suffering from spinal injuries and other physical disabilities. Many of these individuals previously stayed at the Nepal Disabled Association without any work or engagement. By involving them in this kind of artwork, the institute offers them a meaningful way to contribute and express themselves. The free training opportunities provided by the institute are instrumental in helping these individuals gain new skills and create potential employment opportunities for their future.

The community’s efforts highlight the importance of inclusivity and the transformative power of art. Through their dedication and creativity, the students and teachers are preserving a valuable cultural heritage while simultaneously building a supportive and empowering environment for people with disabilities.
